Submissions
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.- The author accepts that the peer reviewer may be named in the final publication but will remain anonymous until after all editorial processes are complete.
- The submission has not been previously published, in part or in whole, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- All third-party-owned materials used have been identified with appropriate credit lines, and permission has been obtained from the copyright holder for all formats of the journal. Authors acknowledge their responsibility to gain all permissions prior to submission.
- All authors qualify as authors, as defined in the authorship guidelines, and have given permission to be listed on the submitted paper.
- Tables are all cited in the main text and are included within the text document.
- Figures are all cited in the main text and are uploaded as supplementary files. Figures/images have a resolution of at least 150dpi (300dpi or above preferred). The files are in one of the following formats: JPG, TIFF, GIF, PNG, EPS (to maximise quality, the original source file is preferred).
- All participants included within the article in which an individual or a group of individuals can be identified have signed informed consent forms, or had had their legal guardian do so, giving permission to publish the submitted content under a CC-BY licence.
- Research has been approved by an appropriate ethics committee, with the name of the committee and reference number of approval included within the submitted file. Otherwise, a statement that ethics approval was not required has been added to the file.
- The corresponding author is submitting an ORCID identifier in their author data and co-authors have been recommended to also provide an ORCID, as per the journal policy.
- The abstract has been added in English and a separate file has been uploaded in your native language if it is not English.
- A 150 word lay summary or a 2-3 minute podcast that briefly summarises the study for a lay audience has been uploaded. Examples of previous podcasts can be found on the IJELT blog learning space.
- A transcript of the audio, to aid accessibility, has been uploaded for all multi-media outputs.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines. Every effort has been made to ensure that the submission is ready for peer review according to the journal's review policy.
Research
Research articles must describe the outcomes and application of unpublished original research. These can take the form of theoretical, conceptual, methodological and empirical articles. These should make a substantial contribution to knowledge and understanding in the subject matter and should be supported by relevant figures and tabulated data. Research articles should be no more than 8,000 words in length.
Literature Review
Literature Reviews should provide original insights by synthesising and critiquing findings of literature on a particular topic. These can include systematic literature reviews, narrative reviews, rapid reviews and meta-synthesis, and should clearly advance the field. Review articles should be no longer than 12,000 words in length.
Policy reviews (research)
Policy review articles should analyse and critique policy in fields relevant to the aims and scope of the journal. Articles should draw on pertinent research. They should contribute to discussion and arguments pertaining to policy area(s) and have clear implications for policy developments. Policy review articles should be between 6,000-8,000 words in length.
Protocol
Protocol articles report on ongoing or planned projects that have not yet generated results/started the final data generation phase. The aim is to help share the study’s design and analysis plan prior to the publication of results, in an effort to prevent unnecessary duplication of work and increase transparency and collaboration. The submission must include a detailed description of the project design, as well as the rationale behind the study. Results should not be presented. The dates of the study must be included in the manuscript and cover letter. Protocol articles should be no more than 4,000 words in length.
Multi-media article
Multi-media and creative submissions (such as animations, poetry, comics, expert interviews) will be considered. Please contact the Editor-in-Chief for further guidance.

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms. If a submission is rejected or withdrawn prior to publication, all rights return to the author(s):- Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.
- Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.
- Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).
Submitting to the journal implicitly confirms that all named authors and rights holders have agreed to the above terms of publication. It is the submitting author's responsibility to ensure all authors and relevant institutional bodies have given their agreement at the point of submission.
Note: some institutions require authors to seek written approval in relation to the terms of publication. Should this be required, authors can request a separate licence agreement document from the editorial team (e.g. authors who are Crown employees).
Privacy Statement
Privacy and Consent Policy
The data collected from registered and non-registered users of journals on the hosting platform falls within the scope of the standard functioning of peer-reviewed journals. It includes information that makes communication possible for the editorial process; it is used to inform readers about the authorship and editing of content; it enables collecting aggregated data on readership behaviours, as well as tracking geopolitical and social elements of scholarly communication.
The editorial teams of hosted journals use this data to guide their work in publishing and improving their journal. Data that will assist in developing this journal platform (Open Journal Systems – OJS) may be shared with its developer Public Knowledge Project (PKP) in an anonymized and aggregated form, with appropriate exceptions such as article metrics. The data will not be sold by the hosted journals or PKP nor will it be used for purposes other than those stated here.
Registered users
Users who register with hosted journals, including authors and peer reviewers where applicable, consent to having the personal information being stored in the University’s journal hosting platform (OJS) and processed by the platform and journal editorial teams.
Authors
Authors who make a submission to hosted journals consent to the personal information they supply as part of the submission being stored in the University’s journal hosting platform (OJS) and processed by the platform and journal editorial teams. Authors who make a submission have the responsibility to ensure that all contributors have read the journal Privacy and Consent policy and consent to having their personal information that is supplied as part of the submission process being stored in the University’s journal hosting platform (OJS) and processed by the platform and journal editorial teams. Authors published in hosted journal are also responsible for the human subject data that figures in the research reported in the journal.
Website visitors
The University’s journal hosting platform (OJS) collects anonymised usage log data, including IP addresses, pages visited, date visited, browser information, and geographical data. This information is not used to identify visitors personally and it is not used for any purpose other what is described here. The platform also uses cookies to manage session history and provide a better user experience – more details can be found in the Cookies section.
Rights of the Individual
Those involved in editing the hosted journals seek to be compliant with industry standards for data privacy, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provision for “data subject rights” that include (a) breach notification; (b) right of access; (c) the right to be forgotten; (d) data portability; and (e) privacy by design. The GDPR also allows for the recognition of “the public interest in the availability of the data,” which has a particular saliency for those involved in maintaining, with the greatest integrity possible, the public record of scholarly publishing.
All users whose details are stored in the University’s OJS installation can exercise their rights of the individual, as they are detailed in the GDPR.
